What is a trailer?
A trailer, also called a semi-trailer or freight trailer, is an unpowered vehicle that connects to a tractor unit through a fifth-wheel coupling. Trailers are an essential component in long-distance freight transport. Their maximum legal length is typically 16.5 meters, and they come in a wide range of configurations, axle setups and specializations to meet the demands of global industries.
- Axles, load capacities & GVW explained
The total carrying capacity of a trailer is referred to as its Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) — a combination of its own weight and its maximum permissible load. The GVW is determined by:
- The number of axles
- The load limit per axle
- The kingpin load or fifth wheel load provided by the tractor unit
For example: A trailer with 3 axles rated at 8.000 kg each and a kingpin load of 12.000 kg results in a GVW of 36.000 kg (3 × 8.000 kg + 12.000 kg).
Our trailer inventory includes units optimized for maximum payloads, often built with lightweight materials to increase cargo capacity without compromising durability.
Understanding legal & technical load limits
While trailers may be technically capable of carrying heavier loads, local regulations often limit the GVW to reduce road wear. The standard axle load limit is usually 8.000 kg, although this can vary depending on the type of suspension or axle system installed.
We offer trailers equipped with advanced axle technologies such as:
Lift axles: Improve fuel efficiency and reduce tire wear when the trailer is lightly loaded by lifting one axle off the road.
Steerable axles: Enhance maneuverability in tight spaces, commonly used on urban delivery trailers (also known as city trailers). These axles may feature air, steel or hydraulic suspension systems.
Trailer brake systems: Drum vs. disc
pk trucks supplies trailers equipped with either drum brakes or disc brakes, depending on operational requirements:
Drum brakes: Ideal for construction or off-road environments due to enclosed design, which protects against dirt and debris. Cost-effective and easy to maintain.
Disc brakes: Provide superior stopping power and cooling performance. Better suited for long-distance hauling or high-speed transport.
